Design Services: Complete Description & Costs

PHONE CONSULTATIONS

Each new client will have half hour FREE consultation to talk to our specialists and obtain valuable tips about their future landscaping project.

ON SITE MEETINGS

After the phone consultation, we provide a design questionnaire to answer and we set up an on site meeting to talk and provide an estimate either for doing design or to develop ball park estimate based on the discussions. The design estimate will cost $50 while the installation bid will cost $150 to cover our travel and time. These costs will be reimbursed if you choose our company’s design or installation services. The professional estimates that we provide serve as guideline for you when you talk to other landscapers.

SITE MEASUREMENTS, BASE PLAN & INITIAL SITE ANALYSIS

In order to create a landscape conceptual plan we need a base plan or site map. We can work from the base plan that you provide either in hard or soft format or develop one for you. If you provide a base plan, we will check the measurements before we start developing landscape master plan for your residence to avoid any errors. The next step is initial site analysis, to take into account aspects like overall grading, advantages and drawbacks of the site, existing plant material, current soil condition, ideal areas for placement of functional areas to match your life style, privacy issues, neighborhood, sun exposure, microclimates etc. This process may take few to several hours depending on the size and shape of the property.

PLAN DRAWINGS OR BLUE PRINTS

Using the base plan, taking into consideration your preferences that you have listed in the design questionnaire, local and regional conditions, aesthetics of your residence and extensive database information, we will create a scaled Master Plan as a basis for Hardscape Conceptual plan, planting plan and other structural details. The plan indicates the exact placement of all existing and proposed new structures, plant material and hardscape elements which are the essential components of the landscape design.

Using the master plan, hardscape conceptual drawing outlining hardscape surfaces like patios, paths, decks, fences, arbors, water features, hot tubs, swimming pools, low voltage lighting, etc. are presented. When you are satisfied with our hardscape concept design presentation and approve it, we will create a planting plan or other construction drawings. You will also receive photo depictions of the proposed landscape, plant photos and care recommendations, hardscape specifications, planting and maintenance guides and any other requested materials.

The drawings may be either hand drawn or rendered in AUTOCAD depending on the project. The projects are priced individually based on the scope of work.

CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS

These are the detailed drawings from which the landscape elements will be built. Some sites may not require details and can be installed from hardscape concept and a detail planting plan, while others may require if you desire unique and custom landscape features. Construction Drawings include the below:

Structural Plan
This drawing depicts all hardscape elements with descriptive call-outs referencing the corresponding Construction Detail. The Finish Schedule lists all colors and finishes for all hardscape elements.

Lighting Plan
This drawing includes placement and specification of all fixtures, transformers, wiring runs - total wattage calculations and transformer wiring diagrams with a legend of component list.

Planting Plan
This drawing lists all proposed plant material by Botanical name, and includes such details as the quantity, and size of container at installation (e.g., one gallon, five gallon, etc.). Each plant is depicted as a circle representing the plant’s full size at maturity.

Irrigation Plan
Lawn sprinklers, shrub heads, drip systems, controllers and piping with a complete component list.

Construction Details
The “how to build” drawings for each landscape element, including irrigation and planting installation procedures.

ADDITIONAL DRAWINGS

Custom Details
These are custom items specifically designed for the Client’s landscape, such as a uniquely-styled column, gate, or water feature. These elements can truly create a one-of-a-kind landscape.

Grading and Drainage Plan
This technical drawing ensures proper drainage of your new landscape and provides the exact elevations of all proposed structures (steps, walls, piers, etc.). This drawing is priced separately, as the amount of work involved to produce the Grading and Drainage Plan is contingent upon both the degree of the desired drainage system (underground pipe network) as well as the complexity of the finalized design. Most properties will require some form of a grading and drainage plan. However, Hortus Design is not a licensed landscape surveyor.

As-built Plans
Hortus Design Sustainable Landscapes will provide, upon request and at additional cost, as-built plans depicting the new landscape exactly as it was installed after completion (e.g., irrigation, drainage, and planting).

Optional CD ROM
We can provide CD with permanent electronic record of your landscape plan drawings with elevations, specifications and plant reports. This will be additional $50.

STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING

Depending on individual town requirements, the design may include items that may need engineering by a licensed structural engineer (e.g., decks, certain retaining walls, pools, etc.). Hortus Design Sustainable Landscapes will inform the Client of which items will need engineered, and find a licensed structural engineer to perform this work. The Client will be invoiced for this work directly by the selected structural engineer.

OTHER CONSULTATION SERVICES

For those clients looking for inspiration and landscaping ideas to renovate or transform your existing garden or requiring advice on specific landscape problems we offer a minimum two-hour consultation which includes a brief written report.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN FOR DIY PROJECTS

For Do-It-Yourself front and backyard landscaping projects where you plan to install yourself, an on-the-spot consultation and a sketch with a plant list are offered if you do not require detail blue prints.
